The WLA Mourns the Passing of Dr. Don (Doc) Hedges

Doc Hedges was a highly respected physician and sports enthusiast who dedicated his life to helping athletes throughout British Columbia. For over two decades, he was the “lacrosse player’s doctor”, providing invaluable medical support to a host of amateur and professional teams.

Hedges was involved with the Coquitlam Sr. Adanacs Lacrosse Club for 25 years as team physician, president, and director, and under his tutelage, the Adanacs appeared in five Mann Cup championships, winning the coveted title in 2001.

In addition, Doc Hedges selflessly offered his services to various lacrosse organizations, including the Vancouver Ravens (NLL), Team Canada Men’s Box Lacrosse teams, and numerous Junior A teams. He also served as the academic advisor and physician of the SFU Men’s Field Lacrosse program.

Hedges served as a team physician for other sports teams including the Vancouver Whitecaps and 86’ers (21 years), Burnaby Lake Rugby Football Club (22 years) and the New Westminster High School Football team (6 years).

Doc Hedges has been recognized for his tremendous contributions to sports medicine, being inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame and voted Physician of the Year (2013) in Community Sports Medicine. His benevolent dedication to sports and the athletes has enriched his hometown of Coquitlam and many communities beyond.

“Dr. Hedges had a talent for making life-long friendships among the executive, coaches, and particularly players he worked with over the years.” Adanacs alumni Brad Richardson said. “He had a way of building someone’s confidence and connecting with them at the same time.”

“From my years as a player to my time as Commissioner, Doc Hedges’ commitment to our players, the game of lacrosse, and his community is unparalleled, and his legacy will live on for many years to come,” said WLA Commissioner, Paul Dal Monte.

On behalf of all at the Western Lacrosse Association, our thoughts are with Doc’s many friends and family. He will be greatly missed.
